In the 1980s Australia was considered one of the most admired countries in the world on an environmental scale. That record, built under the Hawke government and our ideals about environmental protection has now been trampled by the rest of the world. The scandal of Packer’s proposed Barangaroo Casino
The Packer family have only once faced public scrutiny in their pursuit of a casino license in Australia. In the early ’90s, Kerry Packer ran a very distant third to Showboat and Leighton Properties in his pursuit of the license to run a casino in Sydney. Kerry spent the next 2 years desperately trying to overturn the decision using every possible argument to blacken Showboat’s name. The memory of it reminds me of all the arguments Packer advanced to reverse Showboat’s victory. (more…)

Despite what the media says, John Howard was not a supporter of sport
I manage a wry smile every time I see John Howards’ name mentioned as a ‘cricket tragic’ or as a supporter of sport. The Hawke Government introduced in excess of 10 pieces of legislation in the Parliament in the 1980s. The word sport had not been included in one piece of legislation that had been introduced into the Parliament in the 100 odd years since Federation. In almost every case the Howard opposition opposed the Hawke legislation and as the Minister involved Ihad to deal with the Democrats in the Senate to get our legislation passed. (more…)
