We are receiving an increased volume of comments on articles. That is very encouraging. But if comments are to be posted they should not exceed 100 words and must include the full name of the writer.
John Menadue is the Founder and Editor in Chief of Pearls and Irritations. He was formerly Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet under Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser, Ambassador to Japan, Secretary of the Department of Immigration and CEO of Qantas.

Mea maxima culpa, John; as well as duly chastised with non-publication of my letter last week. Apologies!
One suggestion: given that P&I publishes topics that are schematically linked, why not hold over and publish longish letters as articles in the forthcoming week?
Thanks.
I’m probably one that writes fairly long comments, but it is only because this website covers issues that the usual media sources avoid, such as questioning our federal government and the compliant media’s utterly biased pro-US commentary around China. As someone that has studied China historically, culturally and politically for many years, as well as the US’s current attitudes towards the country, P and I is the only site that allows me to add what I know without being outnumbered by bigoted abuse from other comment makers. Generally anyone that holds a different view on China is accused for being a CCP lover, and apologist for China, or a ‘commie’. In my view Australians have been fed nothing but biased propaganda on this issue, and it is a very dangerous game we are playing. Sensible, fair, and non-biased diplomacy is what is required for the sake of Australia’s future let alone that of China.
Thank you John, this site is/was a great initiative on your part, and very much needed in Australian society.
How did you come up with 100 ? That’s very limiting and doesn’t allow much depth. There have been some excellent comments recently which would have been over the 100 word limit and no where near as good if shortened to that limit. The local rag has a limit of 250 which is more reasonable. I don’t think Pearls and Irritations will be as good if comments are limited to 100 words.
