John Frew’s letter on scholarships raises the interesting question of who gets them. Here in Adelaide, where you have to send your offspring to a so called private school, if you are to be anyone , many/most of the scholarships go to the well off middle class . Those with one pampered child who is already well endowed with all the right attributes that these schools want get the scholarships. Not too many poor and deserving win scholarships and even if academically smart, all the other cultural attributes that these schools hanker after are not evident enough for kids to make the cut. As St Matthew said ‘to him that hath more will be given’.
